Argentine polo ponies, crossbred criollos and thoroughbred English horses. They are fast and full of stamina as they have to make swift starts in the game of polo. Their incredible handling means they can turn 360°, change their footing and stop dead, all commanded by the rider changing their position in the saddle. Lively and alert, these horses remain calm and willing throughout the duration of a match.
For experienced riders who are comfortable riding at all paces.
Polo experience is not obligatory but it is strongly recommended that you are able to ride well at all paces and are steady in the saddle in order to practise this sport that combines rapidity and skill.
Maximum weight of rider: 100 kg
High quality saddles and tack, adapted to polo playing.
The saddle has practically no saddle flaps or padding under the main flap, allowing the knee to grip the saddle tightly. The stirrups are wide to avoid splitting during a match. Martingales and double bridles are often obligatory. Numnah and bandages to protect the horse's tendons.
Polo-specific equipment will be provided: hat, kneepads to protect against impact from other players, mallets, balls. You only need to bring standard riding equipment: boots, gloves, jodhpurs (preferably white or light coloured).
Material will be lent to you for the duration of your trip with the option to buy your own equipment once you are there should you wish. This is made to measure, so you will need to provide your measurements one month before your date of arrival. The same applies if you would like to order traditional white jodhpurs.
Your Argentine host, who is a polo horse breeder and is passionate about the sport, will show you each stage of what it takes to take a horse to professional level. An enthusiastic teacher, he will introduce you to the game via theory lessons, but above all on the polo field.
Professional players will help to complete your training and you will have the occasion to participate in a real match with them. All of the instructors have professional experience in polo and can teach you the knowledge they have acquired during their regular travels abroad.
